?Don't Fry Day? draws attention to skin cancer prevention for ...

The following is from the EPA:

The sunny days of spring and summer represent an entirely different dynamic for people in the Midwest.? While large numbers of people are heading for camp sites, parks and beaches that flourish throughout our region, it also means that the agriculture community ? our farmers and ranchers ? are hard at work in the fields and on rangeland. This means that the risk will increase for those spending more time in the sun.

Several agencies have designated Friday, May 25, 2012, as ?Don?t Fry Day? as a way to highlight sun safety. EPA has joined the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Park Service (NPS) to emphasize the dangers of skin cancer and has provided simple steps Americans can take to protect themselves. The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention designated the Friday before Memorial Day ?Don?t Fry Day? as a way to highlight sun safety.

Farmers and ranchers face a range of occupational hazards?from machinery accidents to chemical exposures from fertilizers and pesticides, to injuries from working with animals. A less-visible danger comes from the sun?s ultraviolet rays, which can damage skin, leading to skin cancer, premature aging of the skin, and suppression of the immune system.

?Ultraviolet radiation is a serious threat to our health and especially to the health of those who make a living outside in the fields and on the rangeland in our region,? EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks said. ?The increased threat faced during the long and hot summer days of the heartland makes it imperative that we remember sun safety this summer.?

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. and the most common cancer among 20 to 30 year-olds. It?s estimated that one American dies every hour from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Approximately 76,000 new cases of melanoma will occur this year.

To help protect people?s health, EPA?s SunWise program, one of the nation?s largest environmental and health education programs, encourages kids and their caregivers to practice safe sun habits and raises awareness about UV sunlight that penetrates the Earth?s ozone layer.

Here are some tips to help Americans continue to exercise, get outside and be SunWise this Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer:

Check the UV Index app: Check the ultraviolet (UV) index anytime by downloading EPA?s app (epa.gov/enviro/mobile) to help plan outdoor activities in ways that prevent overexposure to the sun. UV rays from the sun (and from artificial light sources such as tanning beds) can lead to skin cancer.

Apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing: Apply a palm-full of sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher that provides broad-spectrum protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays to exposed skin about 15 minutes before heading outdoors. Reapply every two hours. Wearing protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses also prevents sun damage.

Seek shade, not sun: The sun?s UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so seek shade during this time.

Although less common in individuals with darker complexions, skin cancer does not discriminate and is more often fatal for individuals with darker skin. Overexposure to the sun also causes immune suppression and up to 90 percent of wrinkles, brown spots, leathering of the skin and sagging.

EPA?s SunWise program offers factsheets online that have state-specific information (epa.gov/sunwise/statefacts.html ).

Study Finds Sigmoidoscopy Reduces Colorectal Cancer Rate

Research conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as part of a national study reveals that flexible sigmoidoscopy ? a screening test for colorectal cancer that is less invasive and has fewer side-effects than colonoscopy ? reduces deaths due to colorectal cancer.

Overall, colorectal cancer deaths were reduced 26 percent and new cases were reduced 21 percent as a result of screening with sigmoidoscopy, according to findings of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial that appeared online May 21, 2012, in the New England Journal of Medicine.

As part of the PLCO trial, a population-based, randomized study funded by the National Cancer Institute, a total 154,900 men and women ages 55-74 were randomly assigned to receive flexible sigmoidoscopy screening (intervention group) or usual care (control group) between 1993 and 2001. Control group participants were screened only if they asked for it or if their physician recommended it. Members of the intervention group were screened upon entering the study to collect a baseline measure and again three to five years later. All participants were followed for approximately 12 years.

UAB enrolled more than 6,000 participants. Compliance was one of the highest among all 10 sites ? 96 percent at baseline and 75 percent at five years.

?This trial allowed us to identify an evidence-based screening tool other than colonoscopy to reduce the number of new cases and deaths from colorectal cancer. This finding is important because not all individuals have access to colonoscopy, which is more expensive and has to be performed by specialty physicians," says Mona Fouad, M.D., M.PH., principal investigator of the UAB PLCO site, director of the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine and co-leader of the Cancer Control and Populations Sciences program at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Sigmoidoscopy involves examination of the lower colon using a thin, flexible tube-like instrument, called a sigmoidoscope, to view the anus, rectum and sigmoid colon. It has fewer side-effects, requires less bowel preparation, does not require sedation and poses a lower risk of bowel perforation than colonoscopy, in which a similarly flexible but longer tube is used to view the entire colon.

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Previous research has shown that its incidence and mortality can be reduced with a number of screening methods, including fecal occult blood testing. However, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy are more sensitive than FOBT for detecting pre-cancerous polyps, which may be removed during the procedure to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

?The most effective screening test for colorectal cancer is the one people are willing to take. The results of this study may encourage more people to have colorectal screening with the less invasive and less expensive sigmoidoscopy," says Fouad.

In the PLCO trial, researchers compared the overall colorectal cancer mortality and incidence in the two groups (intervention and control) and also analyzed incidence and mortality according to the location of the cancers that developed. Cancers located in the area from the rectum through a bend in the colon called the splenic flexure were defined as distal, and those located in the transverse colon to the cecum were defined as proximal. Although flexible sigmoidoscopy examines only the rectum and the sigmoid colon, participants with a suspicious finding were referred for a follow-up colonoscopy, in which both the distal and the proximal regions of the colon were examined.

After an average 12 years, participants in the screening group had a 21 percent lower incidence of colorectal cancer and a 26 percent lower mortality rate than participants in the usual-care group. The incidence of distal colorectal cancer in the screening group was reduced 29 percent, and mortality from distal colorectal cancer was reduced 50 percent. While there was no statistically significant decline in deaths from proximal colorectal cancer in the screening group, the incidence of proximal colorectal cancer was reduced 14 percent.

Bud weakens to storm off Mexico's Pacific coast

MANZANILLO, Mexico (Reuters) - Hurricane Bud weakened to a tropical storm as it churned closer to Mexico's coast on Friday, but it brought heavy rains and strong winds that downed trees and closed schools and a major Pacific shipping port.

The first hurricane of the 2012 season, Bud was downgraded to a tropical storm with winds of up to 70 miles per hour (115 km per hour) on Friday afternoon. The center of the storm is expected to hit the coast between the port city of Manzanillo and the tourist town of Puerto Vallarta overnight on Friday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Downpours and wind gusts whipped through Manzanillo, knocking over trees and sending at least three families into emergency shelters.

Local officials said the municipality of Manzanillo had space for 15,000 people if more evacuations were needed.

"I am worried, but not scared. There is a lot of work to be done," Mayor Rosario Yeme said in Manzanillo, where she was coordinating with emergency services before the storm's landfall.

Authorities shut schools in Manzanillo and several other towns on the Pacific coast.

Last October, Hurricane Jova hit in almost the same area, causing at least four deaths and destroying infrastructure and houses in towns near the port.

Mexico has no significant oil installations on the Pacific coast.

"I am nervous," said 31-year-old Alma Rodriguez, who works at a clothing shop geared toward tourists in Manzanillo's commercial center. "But this is not as bad as the last storm. Everything is pretty calm," she said.

PORT CLOSED

Manzanillo port, which ships cars, cattle, metals and tequila to Asian and U.S. markets, was closed on Friday morning. The terminal handles about 9 percent of Mexico's cargo, also importing containers of manufactured goods.

Businessman Ruben Alamo expected port operations would resume by the weekend.

"The storm will affect imports and exports, but only minimally," said Alamo, who owns a construction company and represents a regional construction business association.

Bud was about 80 miles from Manzanillo on Friday afternoon. The storm is expected to turn gradually away from the coast on Sunday, the hurricane center said.

Rainfall from Bud could soak the states of Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco and southern Nayarit with 6 to 10 inches forecast.

In some places, the storm could dump as much as 15 inches of rain, threatening life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, the center said.

Most of Mexico's oil platforms and exporting ports are in the Gulf of Mexico and affected by storms in the Atlantic, where forecasters are expecting a "near-normal" hurricane season this year with up to 15 tropical storms and four to eight hurricanes.

Alleged Lego scammer sold 2,100 boxes through website, cops say

The California software exec arrested for allegedly switching bar codes on high priced Lego sets resold them online through "TomsBrickyard," a site so popular with Lego buyers that they rated his service "excellent."

Thomas Langenbach, who was the vice president of SAP Labs Integration and Certification Center in Palo Alto, was arrested May 8 outside a Mountain View Target store.

In a plot more complex than a Lego Death Star set, police say Langenbach used a home computer and printer -- and lots of Legos ? to amass a small fortune reselling the toys.

"Believe it or not this will be our first tech exec in a Lego case," Police Chief Scott Vermeer told ABC News.

Lagenbach, who lives in a gated multi-million dollar home in San Carlos, Calif., is free on $10,000 bail but has refused to comment.

Police said that Lagenbach, 47, was repeatedly captured on store surveillance video with expensive Lego sets in his cart at retail stores. Detectives said he did something called a "ticket switch," changing the price by allegedly putting his own barcode stickers on boxes so he could pay less. For example he would replace the barcode tag for a $249 Millennium Falcon Lego set with a tag for just $49, police said.

He then resold the sets through the TomsBrickyard web site, according to police. Prosecutors said he sold 2,100 Lego items for roughly $30,000 over the last year. Police are investigating to determine how many of those sets were obtained through fraudulent bar codes.

On the day of his arrest Langenbach had allegedly placed three phony bar codes on items, bought one of the boxes, and placed the other two back on the store's shelf. He had 32 fake bar codes in his car as well, according to Cindy Hendrickson, a supervising deputy district attorney in Santa Clara County.

Police photos from a search of his home show dozens of homemade barcodes neatly organized, plus stacks and stacks of brand new Lego sets.

"It certainly looks like an ongoing enterprise ? to think we caught him the only five times he did this is very hard to believe," Hendrickson said.

Langenbach has so far refused to comment, now that he is free on $10,000 bail and has been is facing felony burglary charges -- not exactly child's play, despite a whole lot of Lego.

It's not the first time Legos have been targeted by scammers. In 2005, a Reno man was arrested for changing prices with phony barcodes for nearly $200,000 worth of Lego sets.
